A couple years ago I had to commute across the Golden Gate Bridge to work. The mornings were gorgeous, clear of traffic, with the fog cascading through those vermillion towers into the gray expanse of the San Francisco Bay. But in the evenings the highways were packed, traffic clogging every one of the lanes until the drive home was an exercise in frustration. During those dire, soul-shriveling times, there was nothing better to take my mind off the tailgaters and the other cranky drivers than a good audiobook.
Because then I didn’t mind so much when someone couldn’t figure out how to merge. I didn’t mind so much when we slowed to a crawl on the winding Waldo Grade. It was the story that mattered. It was the story that made those hours in traffic interesting. Something to look forward to instead of something to dread. Something to stay in the car for, just a few minutes longer, even after I’d arrived home. Which is why I’m so excited to announce that Listening Library will be handling the audio editions of The Reader, and it will be available at the same time as the hardcover! Listening Library has been around since 1955, when it published its first audiobook of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. Since then, they’ve also done audiobooks for super amazing authors like Kate DiCamillo and J.K. Rowling. I’m delighted to be working with them and can’t wait to hear how things turn out! |
